Guitar Master
61The Guitar Master
Who is the Guitar Master? Well... No one can really agree. Jimmie Hendrix is to many... Slash to others... Angus Young to others. It's a debate that will go on for years and others will appear and to some become, "The Guitar Master."
Well, though being The Guitar Master is a big thing, this article isn't really about that. This article is about how you can become a guitar master yourself. Learning the guitar is a bit of a tedious process and takes time. I remember when I got my guitar just over a month ago, I figured I could just pick it up and learn to play in no time... I was wrong.
I have been lucky as many of the guys in my company here in 3/73 CAV of the 82nd Airborne Division play guitar and since we are deployed, most of our free time is spent just playing around with things and learning new things and thus became our guitar practices. This hub, will be related to many of the things I learned from these guys and others as well which has actually sped me along my way. I have taken free online guitar courses, free online guitar lessons, and face to face lessons with these guys. In this hub, I am going to pass along my knowledge and share with you what I feel are the best online guitar lessons and best online guitar courses that will hopefully make you a guitar master.
The first person who really helped me out was one of the kids in my company. He played guitar a lot and was in a band before joining the Army. He taught me a shortcut with chords, specifically transitioning between the G and C Chords... He taught me a variation of the C and G chords that make transitioning between the two chords super easy as you only drop down two fingers from the top two strings to the 2nd and third string while keeping your 3rd and 4th fingers anchored to the 3rd fret, bottom two strings.
Anyway, I got off a bit on a tangent there talking about how he helped me. And while his methods may have helped me, they may not help you. This is why face to face lessons could help you or not... Well, actually, that goes for all types of lessons. However, with face to face lessons, you can always use other people as there are many people out there who play guitar and most are willing to help you for free. I have now been able to take face to face lessons from 5 different people just here in Iraq.
Another method of guitar lessons is the free online guitar lessons, especially the lessons on websites offering online video guitar lessons and online guitar courses. A site I found that works really well for me was Aaron Tomberlin's site, Aaron's FREE VIDEO Guitar Lessons. You can find out more about Aaron's musical background here... It is quite impressive for such a young guy. He is a great teacher and I am really thankful for his willingness to teach for free as I believe he could really make a lot of money teaching guitar or other instruments that he is well versed in. Aaron teaches the very basics and a video is posted below to show where he starts you out at. Aaron explains many things including chord progression, chord theory, and strumming just to name a few. This is by far the best website that offers free online guitar lessons and free online video guitar lessons. In my personal opinion, this is the best online guitar lessons site on the net. Thanks Aaron!
If you are looking at learning songs, Aaron also teaches a lot of songs. A good site for learning songs is Your Guitar Sage... This guy has many instructional videos on Youtube and on his site at http://www.yourguitarsage.com... Check it out.
In my almost 2 months of learning guitar, I have learned the follwing: C, G, E, Em, D, D/F#, A, Am, Am7, D Sus, B, Bm, F, Fm, Fm7 chords. I have learned many different songs from Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" to Matt Redman's "You Never Let Go," to some AC/DC to Eric Clapton to even Blink 182. Most of what I have learned has come from Aaron Tomberlin and Your Guitar Sage. I learned a few from the guys here and from other people on Youtube. With the plethera of free oline video guitar lessons, you should have no problem learning yourself.

Guitars
My first guitar was an Ibanez. It is a good guitar and I have learned a lot using it. I have played one of my guy's Taylor guitar and I have also played 2 different Alvarez guitars here. With those guitars being good guitars, I am going to have to say that my favorite has to be a Martin guitar that I played. It is the Martin D28 and it is an amazing guitar with amazing, rich, deep and lovely sounds. It is very easy to play and virtually plays itself. If you are looking for a good guitar for a decent price, you can purchase a Martin DXK2 acoustic guitar for a reasonable price under $500. Martin Guitars has a long history and many great artists from Johnny Cash to Tom Petty to Jimmy Buffett have played or are still playing Martin Guitars.

All I can say, as a former professional electric guitarist, as well as a guitar teacher- the war on "who's the best guitarist" is very silly. At a certain point, none of these virtuosos are "better' than the other-- just different.
I love a very wide variety of guitarists. My favorites include; Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Jimmy Page, Yngwie Malmsteen, Allan Holdsworth, Stev Vai and Larry Carlton.
I listen to classical, hard rock, heavy metal, thrash, neo classical, Latin Jazz, a smattering of blues, Motown and funk. My moods dictate what I choose to listen to, as well as what I play.

This is a rewarding for many. My son started teaching himself the guitar a year ago Christmas using some online training and a lot of practice. He lucked out and won an autographed guitar from Lenny Kravitz and then went to his concert. He absolutely loves it and it is a great stress reliever. Good luck with your training. Good hub.
