Attitude is the Key to Success
"Attitude is the key to success."
I have heard that quote so many times over the past few years and I don't know how many times I said that statement is completely inaccurate. However, after much deliberation and fighting the losing battle, I have to say that that very statement is true. Heck, Thomas Jefferson once said, "Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from acheiving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude." This statement comes from one of the most influential men in the history of our country as well as one of our founding fathers. Thomas Jefferson and the rest of our founding fathers lived this motto, keeping a positive attitude while drafting the Declaration of Independence; Keeping a positive attitude even through the bleakest of times during the Revolutionary war and staying the course until the very end, allowing this great nation its freedom even to this day.
A positive attitue is the primary strength of all successful individuals. Those individuals have a positive attitude toward everything from their studies, their work, and virtually everything they do in their lives. Their inclination to view life optimistically as a series of opportunities is key to their success. With their postive attitudes, they are able to maintain positive thinking about most everything. Good news to those who have a negative attitude; you still have a chance to change to a positive attitude; you just have to restructure your thought patterns. Don't dwell on problems, instead, embrace the challenges because those challenges are what drives your human spirit.
Success also entails the concept of self assessment. As you assess yourself, you should recognize your needs to learn new tasks and subjects while relating more effectively with others, setting goals, managing time and stress, and creating a balanced and productive life. As you assess yourself, face the truth and look at yourself objectively; admit to your flaws while focusing on your positive strengths.
Critical thinking skills are very important to your success. Critical thinking is a logical, rational, systematic thought process that is necessary in understanding, analyzing, and evaluating information in order to solve a problem or situation. Through the concept of critical thinking, you are able to overcome those minor obstacles impeding your success. Your critical thinking process is much more effective by keeping a positive attitude.
Visualization and affirmations are also vital in success. Through visualization, you are able to use your imagination to see your goals clearly and envision yourself successfully engaging in a new, positive behavior. Affirmations are the positive self-talk---the internal dialogue---you carry on with yourself. Affirmations counter self-defeating patterns of thought with more positive, hopeful, and realistic thoughts. By using visualization and affirmations, you help yourself to relax, boost your confidence, change your habits, and perform better.
Overall and ultimately, your attitude will prove the most beneficial tool to help you acheive great success. Zig Ziglar has been quoted, "Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude." This is very true... You can be the smartest, most intelligent person in the world, but if you have a bad attitude, you will not succeed. You must believe that you can climb the highest mountain; You must see the writing on the wall and not quit until you have won. You have to soldier on regardless of what happens. Be a man in motion... Keep a positive attitude because as I said before, "ATTITUDE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS!"

Hey WHCobb, great thoughts here. Like you, for years I resisted and argued with the saying "attitude is everything" butting my head up against the wall. Eventually I learned the other famous saying, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" and decided it was time to change my attitude and go positive!
In the movie "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart, Stewart's character is considered crazy, but at one point he gives someone advice about life, he says: "My Mom told me that in life you have to be either really smart or really kind to survive. I spent the first half of my life trying to be really smart, I recommend, being really kind."
