Boise State and the BCS

I was reading an article on CBSsports.com today and it was a rebuttal to the comments made by Ohio State University’s president about Boise State and TCU not be worthy of playing in the National Title Game. Well, his comments prompted Boise State’s school president to make a rebuttal.

The article stated, " “It's easy for the presidents to talk, but ask the ADs when's the last time that they seriously entertained taking requests or inviting Boise State to [play them]," Kustra said. "If you're Boise State or TCU, they're going to want to steer way clear of you."

He said he had phone records that would prove that Boise State had tried to schedule home-and-home games with Top 25 teams from the BCS conferences, but that they would not play the Broncos anywhere but at their home stadium. ”

Well… Let’s see how Boise State has fared against BCS Schools since it was implemented in 1998, because after all, all the controversy is because of the BCS system…

Since 1998, Boise State is 7-12 against teams from the BCS conferences and they have yet to win against a school from the SEC.

In 1998, the “Mighty” Washington State (PAC-10) beat BSU by a score of 33-21…. In Boise.
In 1999, UCLA (PAC-10) promptly beat Boise down 33-7… A home game for UCLA.
In 2000, Arkansas (SEC) beat BSU by a score of 38-31 and Washington State (PAC-10) beat BSU by a score of 42-35.
In 2001, the South Carolina Gamecocks (SEC) beat BSU 32-13.
In 2002, BSU got hammered, 41-14 by Arkansas (SEC).
In 2003, Oregon State (PAC-10) beat BSU 26-24.
Now, in 2004, BSU got its first win against a BCS team by crushing Oregon State (PAC-10) 53-34.
In 2005, BSU was 0-3 against BCS teams losing to Georgia (SEC) 48-13, Oregon State (PAC-10) 30-27, and Boston College (ACC) 27-21 in the MPC Computers Bowl.
In 2006, BSU turned the corner and was 2-0 against BCS schools by beating Oregon State (PAC-10), again, 42-14 and Oklahoma (Big 12) in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl 42-41 with the “Hook and Lateral and the infamous Statue of Liberty” plays.
In 2007, BSU lost to ECU (Big East) 41-38.
In 2008, BSU beat Oregon (PAC-10) 37-32.
In 2009, BSU beat Oregon (PAC-10) 19-8.
And finally, in 2010, BSU has beaten Virginia Tech (ACC) 33-30 and Oregon State (PAC-10) 37-24.

In relation to the articles written, in my opinion, neither school president has any room to say anything. Sure, Ohio State is 4-3 in BCS bowls but they were blown out 2 years in a row in the National Championship game. Ohio State has definitely benefited from the BCS more than any other school but haven't proven anything in the BCS. Like Boise State who is struggling with the SEC, Ohio State is 0-9 all time versus the SEC in bowl games. So, a president from a school benefiting from the BCS will naturally defend it and adamitly disagree with a playoff system. Another president with a school that continually cries about no one will play them from the big conferences... Look pal, when your record is 7-12 agains BCS conferences, why should they play you and why should you ever be considered for a National Title??? Also, when you stop asking for more of a cut than you could ever give back to an opposing school, stop crying about a home and home game. It's true... Boise State called the big name schools and got a home and home accepted... Then, the greed set in and they wanted $1 million of the "gate" to play at an opposing team's home and would only be able to give about $250,000 or so to a visiting school, if that much.... In a home and home series... It's ridiculous to ask for 4 times more than you could ever offer. So... Boise State... STOP CRYING! You haven't proven anything yet. At least Ohio State has won BCS bowls and play BCS schools at least 8 times a year.

Boise State will play Oregon again but this time on a bigger stage in the BCS National Championship game… I say this because I believe South Carolina will beat Auburn, knocking them out of the National Title game. Does Boise State deserve to be there? I don’t know and don’t really care… I think they should schedule a better schedule every year and these big time schools should accept the “weak” challenges… As I have said before, if BSU were to play all of the teams in the SEC, even this year, the best record they muster against them is 7-5. Again, BSU is 7-12 against BCS schools since the inception of the BCS and in that record, they are 0-4 against SEC. I am thankful that BSU will play UGA in 2011 in Atlanta… Chick-Fil-A is an outstanding place to eat and a fabulous organization, especially given the fact they are giving fans what they want to see… the likes of BSU against some of the big name schools… Steve Spurrier has said if ESPN would put it together on the opening night game on ESPN, which USC plays in every year, he’d play BSU or TCU…. Chick-Fil-A has stepped up to make money a “non-issue…” Now, will the likes of ESPN, CBS, NBC, Fox do the same? That’s what it’s going to take to make this happen.

Well... They lost to Nevada... A good Nevada team but not the caliber that most SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, and Pac 10 teams play weekly... Still, I would love to see Boise get clobbered on the big stage just to shut up the critics. Also, I believe now, TCU will face Oregon in the National Championship game because Auburn will lose to South Carolina in the SEC Championship game.

Well, the Old Ball Coach wasn't ready for the Cam Nation. Really, Garcia is so unpredictiable. On again, off again. On for Bama. Off for Auburn. It would be awesome for Boise State to play any SEC team (xcept maybe Vandy)SEC would beat the brakes off of them. If your looking for respect, get in a conference that demands respect. We can respect Boise then.

The criterion should not be wins and losses but how equally they played. If you look at the scores for many of those games you list, you will see that many of them were very close. Boise State deserved better over the past three bowl seasons. Perhaps without Kellen Moore they will not be so competitive in the future. But they were really shafted by the BCS bowl fiasco in recent years.

This article was written about 14 months ago... BSU is a good team but would probably only go 8-4 in most of the BCS conferences. I believe they did get shafted this year, however, given that Michigan and VT are playing in the Sugar Bowl... Neither team in my opinion deserved to be there... Should be BSU vs. Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl this year... The BCS is garbage. I do think the move to the Big East is a good move but the likes of West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, and Rutgers need to step up a bit and the Big East as a whole needs to. At any rate, I'm not against BSU in any way but as it stands now, they do not consistently deserve to play in the big time games. Their AD needs to stop being a douche and other schools need to stop being douches about the BSU phenomenon; GO OUT AND PLAY THE BIG BOYS and BIG BOYS STOP CRYING AND TAKE THE HIT IN THE WALLET TO PLAY BSU.
